Snub-Nosed Breeds

What is a snub-nosed breed?

A snub-nosed breed is a dog or cat with a short or flat face, medically known as brachycephalic. These breeds have a unique look with wide, rounded heads and compact features which can give them a pushed in nose. Common snub-nosed dog breeds are Pugs, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Boxers and Shih Tzus, while Persian cats are the feline examples. Although cute to look at, this face structure can lead to breathing problems, heat sensitivity and other health issues due to the compressed airways and nasal passages. They need special permission to fly.

What are the risks associated with snub-nosed breeds travelling by air?

Air travel is risky for snub nosed breeds due to their compromised respiratory system. Their short airways make it hard for them to breathe efficiently, especially in stressful and unfamiliar situations . This can lead to oxygen deprivation, heat stroke, and even fatal respiratory distress during flights. Travel stress can also exacerbate these conditions, so snub-nosed pets are especially vulnerable. Because of these risks, many airlines either restrict or ban brachycephalic breeds from flying in cargo, or require IPATA agents to book on your behalf. Some airlines strongly recommend in cabin travel when possible.
